DockYard’s innovative culture recognized alongside Google, Dell, Diageo, Alibaba, Etsy, Nestle, and many others.

DockYard, a digital product consultancy specializing in user-centered web application design and development, has been named to Fast Company’s second annual Best Workplaces for Innovators list. The list honors businesses and organizations that demonstrate a deep commitment to encouraging innovation at all levels.

This accolade recognizes DockYard’s culture of continuous innovation, focused on advancing web technologies, practitioners, and communities to create more meaningful user experiences.

Developed in collaboration with Accenture, the 2020 Best Workplaces for Innovators ranks 100 winners from a variety of industries, including computer science, biotech, consumer packaged goods, nonprofit, education, financial services, cybersecurity, and engineering. Working together, Fast Company editors and Accenture researchers scored nearly 900 applications, and a panel of eight eminent judges reviewed and endorsed the top 100 companies—an increase from last year’s list of 50. The 2020 awards feature workplaces from around the world with several of the honorees based outside the U.S.

“We seek out innovators to join our team and support them in effecting change both in our organization and the broader communities we work within,” said Jon Lacks, CEO of DockYard. “Our ability to solve the most complex product challenges stems directly from our curiosity, respect for diversity, and the varied experiences of our team members. We’re proud to be recognized by Fast Company’s Best Workplaces for Innovators list for fostering a workplace that supports, inspires, and spreads innovative thinking.”

Over the past five years, DockYard has invested over $2M in R&D to advance the web for all. With these efforts, the company has created and progressed web technologies not only used by DockYard, but Fortune 500 companies. DockYard has devoted thousands of hours in open-source contributions to the JavaScript ecosystem as well as server-side technologies—in particular to the Phoenix web framework and libraries built around the Elixir programming language. Last year, the company’s R&D team set out to create Lumen, an ambitious open source project that could allow Elixir to be used as a language for frontend development. These contributions aim to empower developers to create richer, more reliable, and interactive web experiences with greater efficiency.

DockYard provides employees with one day per week to focus on innovation projects. During these “DockYard Days,” employees use their time to build tangible skills, share knowledge via blogs, get involved in the company’s Diversity & Inclusion program, or improve the tools and processes that contribute to making the web a better place.

“As much of the world recovers from health, economic, and social crises, we need innovation more than ever,” says Stephanie Mehta, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “This new list of the Best Workplaces for Innovators celebrates organizations that have fostered innovative thinking by investing in technology, research and development, and their employees.”
